LONDON, Nov. 1 -- China'sBeijingandShanghaihasbeennamedbytheNatureIndexasChina'smostscientificallyproductivecities, whichalsoenjoythehighestcity-to-citycollaborationinthecountry.
InanarticlepostedonitswebsiteonWednesday, NatureIndexsaysChina'seconomicrisedramaticallyboostedresearchactivityacrossthecountry, includingthetwoleadingcities.
Between 2017 and 2016, researchersinBeijingincreasedtheircontributiontopapersintheNatureIndexby 43 percent, andShanghai'scontributionincreasedby 22 percent. Thesetrendssupportedanationalgrowthof 45 percentforthesameperiod, saysthearticle.
TheNatureIndexisadatabaseofauthoraffiliationinformationcollatedfromresearcharticlespublishedinanindependentlyselectedgroupof 68 high-qualitysciencejournals. ThedatabaseiscompiledbyNatureResearch.
Lastyear, Beijing'scontributiontojournalsincludedintheNatureIndex, measuredasweightedfractionalcount (WFC), was 1,693, andShanghai'swas 762. Together, thetwocitiescontributedtomorepapersthanthenextdozencitiescombinedinChina, accordingtotheNatureIndex.
BeijingandShanghaibothattractthebestresearchersfromacrossthecountryandoverseas, andincentivesforcooperationremainstrong.
ThenumberofpartnershipsbetweenaninstitutioninBeijingandaninstitutioninShanghaihasincreasedsince 2017. Thetwocitieshaveformed 382 institutionalpartnershipsin 2016, thehighestcity-pairinthecountry, figuresprovidedbytheNatureIndexshow.
