Itwasbasedon 22,000 questionnairessenttoformergraduatestudentswhowereenrolledin 24 universitiesanditseemedtoshowmanypastfearstobegroundless.

      Thedropoutsratewasfoundtobe 31 percent, andinmostcasesthedropouts, whilenotcompletingthePh. D. requirement, wentontoproductivework. Theyarenotonlydoingwellfinancially, but, accordingtothereport, arenotfarbelowtheincomelevelsofthosewhowentontocompletetheirdoctorates.

      Discussingthestudylastweek, Dr. TuckersaidtheprojectwasinitiatedbecauseoftheconcernfrequentlyexpressedbygraduatefacultiesandadministratorsthatsomeoftheindividualswhodroppedoutofPh. D. programswerecapableofcompetingtherequirementforthedegree. AttritionatthePh. D. levelisalsothoughttobeawasteofpreciousfacultytimeandadrainonuniversityresourcesalreadybeingusedtocapacity. SomepeopleexpressedtheopinionthattheshortageofhighlytrainedspecialistsandcollegeteacherscouldbereducedbypersuadingthedropoutstoreturntograduateschoolstocompletethePh. D.
