Asweknow, injournalismasinotherfields, muchcanbelearnedfromthesystematicstudyofprofessionalpractice. Suchstudybringstogetherevidencefromwhichbroadgeneralizedprinciplescanbedeveloped.
Thereis, ashasbeensuggested, agrowingbodyofresearchliteratureinjournalismandbroadcasting, butverylittlesignificantattentionhasbeendevotedtothestudyoftheinterviewitself. Ontheotherhand, manygeneraltextsaswellasnumerousresearcharticlesoninterviewinginfieldsotherthanjournalismhavebeenwritten. Manyofthesebooksandarticlespresentthetheoreticalandempiricalaspectsoftheinterviewaswellasthetrainingoftheinterviewers. Unhappily, thisplentifulgeneralliteratureaboutinterviewingpayslittleattentiontothejournalisticinterview. Thefactthatthegeneralliteratureoninterviewingdoesnotdealwiththejournalisticinterviewseemstobesurprisingfortworeasons. First, itseemslikelythatmostpeopleinmodernWesternsocietiesaremorefamiliar, atleastinapositivemanner, withjournalisticinterviewingthanwithanyotherformofinterviewing. Mostofusareprobablysomewhatfamiliarwiththeclinicalinterview, suchasthatconductedbyphysiciansandpsychologists. Inthesesituationstheprofessionalpersonorinterviewerisinterestedingettinginformationnecessaryforthediagnosisandtreatmentofthepersonseekinghelp. Anotherfamiliarsituationisthejobinterview.
