AbelovedAmericantradition, ThanksgivingDayoffersustheopportunitytofocusourthoughtsonthegracethathasbeenextendedtoourpeopleandourcountry. ThisspiritbroughttogetherthenewlyarrivedPilgrimsandtheWampanoagtribe -- whohadbeenlivingandthrivingaroundPlymouth, Massachusettsforthousandsofyears -- inanautumnharvestfeastcenturiesago. ThisThanksgivingDay, wereflectonthecompassionandcontributionsofNativeAmericans, whoseskillinagriculturehelpedtheearlycolonistssurvive, andwhoserichculturecontinuestoaddtoourNation'sheritage. Wealsopauseournormalpursuitsonthisdayandjoininaspiritoffellowshipandgratitudefortheyear'sbountiesandblessings。
ThanksgivingDayisatimeeachyear, datingbacktoourfounding, whenwelayasidethetroublesanddisagreementsofthedayandbowourheadsinhumblerecognitionoftheprovidencebestoweduponourNation. Amidsttheuncertaintyofafledglingexperimentindemocracy, PresidentGeorgeWashingtondeclaredthefirstThanksgivinginAmerica, recountingtheblessingsoftranquility, union, andplentythatshineduponouryoungcountry. InthedarkdaysoftheCivilWarwhenthefateofourUnionwasindoubt, PresidentAbrahamLincolnproclaimedaThanksgivingDay, callingfor "theAlmightyhand" tohealandrestoreourNation。
