AfterthefoundingofNewChina, diplomaticrelationswereestablishedbetweenChinaandcountriesaftercountriesonthebasisofequalityandmutualbenefit, andmutualrespectforsovereigntyandterritorialintegrity. However, thewrongUSpolicynottorecognizethePeople’sRepublicofChinakeptthetwocountrieslonginmutualestrangementandhostility. Yet, thetrendofprogressofhistoryandtheadvancementofthetimescouldnotbestopped. TheChineseandAmericanpeoplehadalwayscherishedfriendlysentimentstowardeachother, andhadneverstoppedmakingeffortstoseekfriendlyexchangesandcooperationformutualbenefit. In 1970, inhismeetingwiththeUSjournalistEdgarSnow, ChairmanMaoZedongsaid, “ChinaandtheUSwillestablishdiplomaticrelationsanyway. Howcanthetwocountriesstayoutofdiplomatictiesfor 100 years?” PresidentNixonobservedinthesameyearthat “itiscertainlyinourinterest, andintheinterestofpeaceandstabilityinAsiaandtheworld, thatwetakewhatstepswecantowardimprovedpracticalrelationswithPeking”. ChairmanMaoZedongandPremierZhouEnlaidemonstratedstrategicinsightwiththeirdecisionandpersonalcommitmenttolaunchthe “ping-pongdiplomacy”, andDr. HenryKissingermadeasecretvisittoChinainJuly 1971. ThemomentumwasbuilttowardnormalizationofChina-USrelations.
1972年2月，应周恩来总理邀请，尼克松总统对中国进行了“破冰之旅”，实现了“跨越太平洋的握手”。尼克松总统在人民大会堂欢迎宴会致词时表示，我是为了美国人民的利益而来。你们深信你们的制度，我们同样深信我们的制度。我们在这里见面，并不是由于我们有共同的信仰，而是由于我们有共同的利益和共同的希望。我们没有理由要成为敌人。现在是我们两国人民攀登伟大境界的高峰，缔造新的、更美好世界的时候了。中国领导人强调，中美双方要弄清楚彼此之间的分歧，努力寻找共同点，使我们两国的关系有一个新的开始。
